Cedar shake Siding

Premium Cedar Shake Siding Installation & Restoration

Enhance your home’s architectural silhouette with the organic warmth and rugged durability of premium cedar shake siding. Unlike uniform, factory-pressed materials, cedar shakes are either hand-split or saw-sawn to reveal a rich, textured grain that provides an unmistakable “high-end” coastal or rustic aesthetic.

Our expert team specializes in the technical application of Western Red Cedar, a species naturally saturated with preservative oils that resist moisture, decay, and insect infestation. By utilizing advanced rain-screen systems and stainless steel fasteners, we eliminate the cupping and warping often seen in DIY installations, providing a robust, breathable exterior that ages with a distinguished character.

Cedar Shake Siding

Invest in a building material that has been the gold standard for centuries. We combine traditional carpentry with modern moisture-management technology to ensure your cedar shakes remain stable and dry through decades of exposure. Whether you are installing a new perfection shingle for a clean look or a heavy-split shake for maximum dimension, our specialized siding services reinforce your property’s thermal envelope while offering an authentic, natural beauty that synthetic alternatives simply cannot replicate.

Natural Thermal Insulation & Acoustic Dampening

Cedar is cellularly dense, containing thousands of tiny air pockets that act as a natural thermal barrier. A cedar-clad home stays significantly cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter compared to homes with thin vinyl or metal siding. Additionally, the varied texture of the shakes breaks up sound waves, providing a noticeably quieter interior environment.

Expert Grade-A Material Selection

We source only Blue Label or Grade-A cedar, ensuring the wood is 100% heartwood and 100% clear grain. This technical selection is critical; lower grades containing sapwood or knots are prone to premature rot and uneven weathering. Our commitment to premium material selection ensures your siding remains structurally sound for 30 to 50 years.

Precision Stainless Steel Fastening

Cedar contains natural tannins that react chemically with standard galvanized nails, causing unsightly black streaks (bleeding). We utilize only 304 or 316-grade stainless steel ring-shank nails. This prevents chemical staining and ensures the fasteners will never rust out, even in high-moisture or salt-air environments.

Worried About Wood Rot or the Effort of Maintenance?

Many homeowners fear that wood siding is a maintenance nightmare, but when installed with a proper drainage plane (Rain-screen), cedar is incredibly resilient. We understand the balance between ventilation and protection; our professional cedar shake siding service provides the durable, expert-grade installation your home needs to stay dry and visually remarkable.

People Also Ask

What is the difference between a Shake and a Shingle?

It’s all in the texture. A cedar shingle is sawn on both sides, giving it a uniform thickness and a smooth, tailored appearance. A cedar shake is usually hand-split on one side, resulting in a much thicker, highly textured surface with visible furrows. Shakes provide more shadow lines and a more rugged, dimensional look, while shingles are preferred for clean, contemporary designs.

Yes, unless it is regularly stained. When exposed to UV light and rain, cedar naturally weathers to a beautiful silver-gray patina. This is purely aesthetic and does not mean the wood is rotting. If you prefer the original honey or red tones, we can apply a UV-inhibiting semi-transparent stain every 3 to 5 years to preserve the color.

While wood is combustible, we offer cedar shakes that have been pressure-treated with fire retardants at the factory. These treated shakes can achieve a Class A, B, or C fire rating, meeting the strict building codes required in many wildfire-prone or high-density residential areas.

Cupping is caused by uneven moisture—when the front of the shake dries faster than the back. We prevent this by installing a breather or rain-screen mat behind the siding. This creates a small gap that allows air to circulate behind the shakes, ensuring they dry evenly and stay flat for the life of the installation.

We strongly recommend a full tear-off. Installing new wood over old siding traps moisture and prevents us from inspecting the house wrap and structural sheathing for rot. A clean start ensures that the new cedar has a flat, dry, and secure substrate to anchor into.

Cedar should be cleaned every few years with a gentle solution of water and oxygen bleach to remove dirt and mildew. Avoid using high-pressure power washers, as they can fuzz the wood fibers and drive water deep into the wall cavity. A soft-wash approach is always best for natural wood.

In terms of pure ROI, yes. Cedar is a prestige material that significantly boosts a home’s appraisal value. While the upfront cost is higher than vinyl, its superior insulation, long lifespan, and unmatched curb appeal make it a smarter financial move for homeowners planning to stay in their property long-term.
