Wood shingle Roofing

Authentic Wood Shingle Roofing Installation & Precision Care

Transform your home’s skyline with the organic sophistication of authentic wood shingle roofing. While synthetic materials attempt to mimic the look of nature, nothing matches the cellular density and architectural warmth of real timber.

Our expert team specializes in the technical application of taper-sawn wood shingles, which offer a cleaner, more tailored appearance than rugged shakes. By utilizing specialized “breather” membranes and stainless steel fasteners, we eliminate the moisture traps that lead to premature wood rot, providing a resilient, breathable exterior that regulates your home’s temperature while developing a distinguished silver-gray patina over time.

Wood shingle Roofing

Invest in a roofing system that prioritizes structural longevity and natural beauty. We combine master-level carpentry with advanced ventilation strategies to ensure your wood shingles dry evenly after every rain, preventing the cupping and splitting associated with poor installation. Whether you are restoring a coastal estate or finishing a custom mountain home, our specialized wood roofing services reinforce your property’s thermal envelope, offering a premium, sustainable solution that technically and visually surpasses industrial alternatives.

Resilient Grade-A Heartwood Selection

We exclusively install Blue Label certified shingles, ensuring that every piece is 100% heartwood, 100% clear grain, and 100% edge grain. This technical standard is vital for dimensional stability; edge-grain shingles are far less likely to warp or twist under intense UV exposure compared to lower-grade flat-grain wood.

Organic Thermal Insulation and Airflow

Wood is a natural insulator with a significantly higher R-value than asphalt. Our installation process includes the use of specialized cedar-breather mats, which create a continuous air space beneath the shingles. This allows the wood to breathe from both sides, reducing attic heat in the summer and preventing the moisture buildup that leads to structural decay.

Surgical Taper-Sawn Installation Techniques

Unlike standard roofing, wood requires precision-gapping to account for natural expansion. We utilize 304-grade stainless steel ring-shank nails to prevent tannin bleeding—the black streaks caused by reacting with galvanized fasteners. This careful approach ensures your roof remains structurally sound and aesthetically clean for decades.

Worried About Moss Growth or the Weathered Look?

A wood roof is a living system that requires specialized knowledge to maintain its integrity. We understand that improper drainage is the #1 killer of wood shingles; our professional installation and precision care service provides the industrial-grade moisture protection and ventilation your property needs to stay dry and remarkable.

People Also Ask

What is the difference between a wood shingle and a shake?

The difference lies in the manufacturing. Wood shingles are sawn on both sides, resulting in a uniform thickness and a smooth, tapered profile. They provide a refined, clean-line look. Wood shakes are usually hand-split on at least one side, giving them a much thicker, rugged, and highly textured appearance with deep shadow lines.

Western Red Cedar and Eastern White Cedar contain natural oils (thujaplicins) that act as a built-in preservative against decay and insects. However, keeping the roof free of debris like leaves and needles is critical, as organic buildup can trap moisture and override the wood’s natural defenses.

Absolutely. We exclusively use stainless steel nails. Standard galvanized nails will react with the natural acids in the cedar, causing permanent black streaks and eventually rusting through. Stainless steel is the only technical choice for a lifetime wood installation.
Natural wood is combustible, but we offer shingles that have been pressure-treated with fire retardants at the factory. These shingles can achieve a Class A fire rating—the same as asphalt shingles—making them safe and legal for use in most residential areas, including some wildfire-prone zones.

It is not recommended. While wood is strong, the shingles can be brittle when dry, and foot traffic can cause them to crack or split. If maintenance is required (such as gutter cleaning), it should be done by a professional using specialized equipment or from a ladder to avoid damaging the wood fibers.

If you prefer the new wood look, you must apply a UV-inhibiting oil or semi-transparent stain every 3 to 5 years. Without treatment, the wood will naturally weather to a silver-gray patina. Many homeowners prefer this silver look, as it is a hallmark of authentic wood roofing and does not affect the structural integrity of the shingles.

A Cedar Breather is a three-dimensional nylon matrix installed between the roof deck and the shingles. It creates a space that allows air to circulate under the wood. Without it, moisture gets trapped between the shingle and the plywood deck, causing the wood to rot from the inside out. We consider this a non-negotiable component of an expert-level installation.
