Is It Time to Remove Snow on Your Roof?

As winter progresses, homeowners face the challenge of dealing with excessive snow buildups on their roofs. Snow and ice removal are not just about safeguarding your property. It’s a critical step in ensuring your household’s safety. Read on to know when it’s time to remove snow on your roof.

The Risks Associated With Heavy Snow on Roofs

Roofs are designed to withstand a certain amount of weight. When snowfall exceeds that limit, the risk of a collapse increases. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), snow that’s 18 inches or more on low-pitch roofs is a clear indication that removal is necessary. However, this should be done cautiously, as the job poses hazards to individuals and the roofing structure.

Assess the Weight of Snow and Ice

To determine whether it’s time for snow and ice removal, you must understand the weight implications of different types of snow. Fresh, fluffy snow can be deceivingly light. On the other hand wet, heavy snow can weigh substantially more, reaching up to 21 pounds per square foot. When ice comes into the equation, add another 57 pounds per square foot to your calculations.

Catch Early Signs of Trouble

On the days when it snows a lot, look out for signs of stress on your roof. Sagging ceilings, jammed doors and windows and cracks in walls are signs of an overstressed roofing system. Contact professionals immediately if you notice any of these issues in your home.

When the snow threshold surpasses safe limits, it’s a wise decision to call experienced roofers specializing in snow and ice removal. This mitigates safety risks and ensures your roof is cleared efficiently without incurring damage. While removing excess snow is crucial, it’s important not to strip the roof entirely. Maintaining at least 2 inches of snow on the surface can protect shingles from damage.
